GENERATIONAL LOVE IS WEALTH

INTRO

GENERational love is wealth was birthed out of many conversations between myself and my ancestors. it’s a reflection of the tension i was feeling between the traditional idea of generational wealth which tends to be focused on leaving a substantial amount of money behind and the conversation around breaking generational curses.

BACKGROUND STORY

San Diego is an amazingly culturally rich city and while it’s not my hometown, It’s a city where I truly found my creative voice and was able to apply it to community impact and growth. Since 2017, I have been active creating things for San Diego with the goal of helping people see the same beauty I see. It’s more than a city of beaches and bars. San Diego is a diverse and vibrant city. we are a boarder town, we have many universities, bio tech, etc so there are so many different perspectives that exist in this city but they are often overshadowed by the beach life and that usually leaves the arts community in particularly the

MEDIUM

Between Oct of 2022 and Jan of 2023 myself and some collaborators held informal conversations with community members to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing them and their nehigboorhoods.

  1. Lack of well designed accessible space for communities to gather: Accessibility is not just about something being open to people and San Diego does not have many spaces that are initially designed to be accessible to all.

  2. Disconnected Communities: San Diego is home to many diverse communities but most of those communities stay within their self designated silos either based on location or interest.

  3. Lack of consistency: In talking with our communities we identified that while there are events that happen monthly that cater to these communities there is too much in between time to truly build momentum in community building. That time in between allows people to disconnect and disengage in the collaborative process of building community. With a weekly experience these communities are constantly sharing space, colliding with one another, and deepening their connection across community lines.

  4. Lack of platforms and space for artists to grow: San Diego has a wealth of talented young artists but there are a lot that don't feel supported by the institutions or the city at large. Due to lack of perceived opportunity and institutional support young artists often hit a roadblock in San Diego leading to high attrition of young talent. There are not many spaces for those artists to develop an understanding of business while simultaneously honing their craft and building a fan base.

Photos are metaphors, making the abstract concrete and mystifying the mundane. Be clear, be confident, and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself.
